Identify the full assembly
A fire service may use a double-check detector or reduced-pressure detector configuration with a smaller metered bypass. The mainline and bypass components may create more than one test record or procedure.
Send clear photos of the complete installation, nameplate and surrounding valves. A photo of only one test cock does not establish the scope.
Coordinate alarms and impairment
Operating valves or flowing water can affect supervisory devices and monitored alarms. The authorized building or fire-protection contact should manage notifications and impairment procedures.
The backflow tester should not guess who has authority to place a life-safety system out of service. Establish names, phone numbers and the restoration check before the appointment.
Plan access and water control
Fire rooms may be locked, shared or governed by site-specific safety procedures. Confirm keys, escorts, ceiling clearance, drainage, lighting and room to connect the test kit.
Where domestic and fire services interact, identify the boundaries clearly. The work order should state exactly which assembly is being tested.
Treat repair as a separate decision
A failed check or relief component requires a documented response. Parts availability, device size and system status can make same-visit repair impractical.
Before authorizing work, confirm the failed readings, repair scope, impairment implications and retest plan. Replacement may require engineering, permit or fire-protection coordination beyond routine testing.
Verify restoration and reporting
At completion, confirm valves are returned to their approved positions, alarms and supervisory systems are restored, leaks are absent and the authorized site contact accepts the system status.
Retain the passing readings and municipal submission confirmation with the building's fire and plumbing records. The invoice alone is not proof that the City record is complete.
