Expect more than one connection

A notice may identify a premise-level assembly, but internal equipment and later renovations can create additional protection requirements. The owner should compare the municipal record with the actual plumbing inventory.

Do not assume that the visible irrigation device is the only assembly on site. Mechanical rooms, ceiling spaces and service areas may contain separate devices.

Plan the service window

Testing normally requires controlled operation of the assembly shutoffs. Whether that affects a sink, a zone or the entire building depends on the plumbing design.

Choose a time outside critical preparation and cleaning periods. Tell the tester about shared services, tenants, booster pumps, hot-water equipment and any process that cannot lose water unexpectedly.

Protect sanitation and equipment

Kitchen management should know when water is isolated and when service is restored. Follow the site's food-safety procedures if any equipment is taken out of service.

After restoration, check connected equipment according to manufacturer instructions. The backflow test does not replace operational checks on dishwashers, beverage systems or other appliances.

Handle failures with a clear approval path

A failure may be repairable during the visit, but parts and access determine the timeline. Establish who can authorize work and how the site will operate until a passing retest.

For a replacement, confirm the approved device, permit implications, drainage and clearance before work begins. A passing post-work test remains necessary.

Keep the compliance file audit ready

Store the notice, device inventory, field report, repair record, passing retest and submission confirmation together. Include photos or a location note so the next tester finds the correct assembly quickly.

Multi-location operators should use the same record fields across every restaurant while preserving the municipality-specific submission process for each address.

Municipal procedures change. Use these sources and the latest property notice as the final authority.
